Promising Young Woman & Affetmek
(scrool down for english)
Çünkü danışanı, müşterisi, öğrencisi artık o her kimse, ona affetmesi tavsiye edilenler o an orada olmadığı için mevzuya dahil edilmesi akla gelmez bile.
Sevgiyle
Emerald Fennel, who won the hearts of many of us with her screenplays (Killing Eve) and acting, sat on the velvet quilted sofa in the very stylish corner box of my heart with Promising Young Woman, whose script she wrote and directed in 2020. Although Power Of The Dog and Jane Campion seemed to stare at that box for a while, Emerald still sits in the same place, as if she will sit for a long time.
In this article, I don't just want to talk about a great movie that I will give the reader a lot of spoilers. I will call it the 'forgiveness sector' here. This is one of the biggest traps of our age, a wide range of professions ranging from psychological counselors to life coaches, yoga masters, breathing therapists, and family syntaxes, no matter what case they come across, no matter what they have experienced. I want to talk about the insincerity of recommending unconditional forgiveness and the damage it will cause to the person over time. I want to continue by excluding those who are unfortunately few and who carry out their work with scientific and genuine methods, with respect and ethical boundaries, in the sectors included in this profession chart. Few, for example, discuss how scientific a family constellation is, how scientific methods are used in our environment today, and to what extent mentors have the competence and competence to conduct such therapy sessions. Unfortunately, we often witness that most individuals who apply to psychologists and psychotherapists hoping to get psychological counseling and find healing experience terrible experiences that will lead to entirely different traumas during one-to-one therapies. We all come across a psychologist who makes their clients depressed by saying that materiality is the determining factor in relationships. This psychiatrist recommends specific prayers to combat stress, and the specialist scripts the client's life story and sells it to production companies. The most well-known respiratory therapist in our country, who opened courses and trained mentors, declared in the presence of all of us in the past years on a TV channel, "homosexuality is a kind of disease caused by not breathing properly. It could be heal if breath correctly. Then she has witnessed dozens of examples of this". Unfortunately, we see these and similar examples very often because there is neither a control mechanism nor a sanction. At the same time, the competent and well-equipped specialists of this avalanche-growing profession chart cannot count on fingers. For some reason, they cannot be popular, and it is regrettable that the number of those who are the scarcest, the most inexperienced, with the caliber of which even many skills would be missing. It is also clear that the issue is not only employment, namely. For example, being able to give yoga classes while working in the financial sector at the bank last year, taking only six months of yoga practice and two months of an intensive course, and taking a job in which the body is at the center without having mastered anatomy? We cannot explain it only with unemployment or life necessity. It is also clear that being able to jump into these professions without being distilled, assimilated, cooked, or cooked enough, is also an irresistible need to gain popularity. Another primary reason is the need for people to heal, relax, and be peaceful and happy again, not just some people, if I say lonely people, of course. We are so hungry and in need of this that we throw ourselves into the first astrologer, the first breathing coach, the yoga room in the corner, and the psychologist who reconciles the couple about to get divorced. I wish these people, to whom we surrendered with all our sadness, could cure our troubles. We usually get the same prescription at the end of the session, and we start with hope. They suggest that we forgive without any guidance on how we can do it, forgive ourselves and whatever is causing us to do this, and take this burden off our shoulders and become free. So why should a sane person feel the pain of an event that happened years ago as if it had just happened today? Forgive, be free, forgive and let yourself be confident, leave the past in the past, and live your life. But can everything be dismissed in such a snap? I wonder what kind of experiences he had about forgiveness when my breathing coach said, "Forgive, get rid of it; you will see that your lungs will expand because of the lightness, and you will breathe more deeply." What have they forgiven, what pain have they experienced in their life, and what have they lost? I wonder if the young woman I met in the family constellation sessions said her father sexually abused her for years and her mother kept silent all the time. The famous family constellation master told her to forgive her parents because the starting point of these behaviors was only love. Did they ask if those parents regret what they did or acceptance of their behaviors? I don't even discuss what love is like with him. Forgiveness advice is a fixed prescription applied by the performers of these sectors. Nobody cares that much whether the conditions for forgiveness are met. Because the client, the student, whoever they are, and those who were advised to forgive were not there then, it would not even come to mind to include him in the subject. They put all the burden of forgiveness on you like the sole responsibility for a one-person act. They think it's as easy as saying it. To forgive someone, they must ask for forgiveness and feel sadness, remorse, and even remorse for what happened. Before these conditions occur, just because your yoga instructor, breathing coach, or psychologist told you to "forgive and get rid of," you either lie to yourself by thinking that you have forgiven. Or even if you can make sincere forgiveness by believing, you will start to lose your self-esteem and feel much worse over time.
Let's go back to our movie. In Promising Young Woman, the sexual assault of Cassie's best friend, Nina, while she was drunk at a university party. Cassie aims to get revenge from eyewitnesses of the incident who later kept silent, the dean of the school, and the lawyer who took the defense of rapists, one by one, took revenge on all the participants of a collective crime involving people. We are watching. At the end of the terrible event, this system, which makes it possible for criminals instead get the punishment they deserve, puts all the blame on Nina because she was drunk. And continued their lives as if nothing had happened; Nina, who could not bear the weight of more events in school, judiciary, and society, put an end to her life, while Cassie lost herself—lost most of it. She refuses to start a life of her own. She exists in the system by leaving her education halfway, living with her family, and working in a simple cafe, leading a lifeless life where she can only find the motivation to avenge Nina. One day, she meets her classmate from college, and her old days are rekindled as people talk about events. Hearing that, Al, who caused Nina's death and continued his life as if nothing had happened, came back to the city and made plans for a wedding. Her four-stage revenge plan starts with a girlfriend who was present at the event and refused to testify. Just like in the old days, she says she doesn't remember the event exactly. They were all drunk. Nina was also very drunk and did not resist what was done to her back then. While the conversation continues, Cassie makes her drink at the table and gets her drunk, leaving her alone with a prearranged man by giving him a room key from the hotel where the restaurant is. She aims to make her married friend, who has two children, confront the past and empathize with Nina about what could happen when an event he does not want happens to her while she is drunk, and Cassie succeeds in this. Her friend Amber sent her some videotapes that she didn't give as evidence to the court in time. In the second leg of her revenge plan, she comes to terms with the dean of the University. While tricking the dean's little girl into waiting in the library after school, she goes to the dean's room and recalls the terrible incident at the school years ago, leading to Nina's death. When the dean reiterates her past stance, she says that her daughter was at a drinking party with a group of men at the same venue as Nina, comparing her to the truth that the dean's terrible choice in the past was so wrong that it could even affect her daughter's life. In the third leg of the plan, she will come to terms with Al's lawyer, who sexually assaulted Nina, and make a deal with someone for this. First, Cassie will go to the lawyer's address and talk to him, then the prearranged man she hired will go to the address and maybe harm the lawyer physically or scare him. But Cassie will not tell the man she hired the plan. She says canceled instead. The reason is that the lawyer said he was experiencing deep regret and remorse, and Cassie witnessed his sincerity. I refrain from saying the movie's ending, but I want to emphasize that even a person who has risked a lot of things in his life can forgive. Forgiveness is truly liberating and can be a mighty savior and healer. But forgiveness is possible only by asking for forgiveness. All the opposite situations are not authentic and injure the person much more. My advice to you is if you haven't watched this fantastic movie, watch it. If you have, watch it again. And please stay away from charlatans.
With love
